The Detroit Yacht Club hosts at least two major DRYA sailing regattas each year. The Memorial Regatta (since 1916) is held on the Saturday of Memorial Weekend and the Sweepstakes Regatta (dating back to 1897) is held on the Saturday after Labor Day annually. Participants are registered individual members of DRYA and others at the invitation of the Detroit Yacht Club Commodore. In addition to these regattas, DYC members participate in the "Off the Dock" series of races throughout the summer.
The DYC is one of the founding members of the Inter-Lake Yachting Association, an organization of over 140 yacht clubs from Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron that was formed in 1885. I-LYA promotes and supports boating of all kinds in the Great Lakes.
The Detroit Yacht Club is also a founding member of the Detroit River Yacht-Racing Association, which was formed in 1912. There are 28 member yacht clubs in DRYA from Toledo, along the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, as well as in Port Huron and Sarnia. DRYA's mission is to promote the sport of Sail Yacht Racing in our local waters and to co-ordinate and assist member clubs with their annual regattas. The member clubs of the DRYA host sailing regattas on Saturdays throughout the summer in Lake St. Clair.
Other regattas of regional or national significance are also sponsored or supported by the DYC.
