Detroit Yacht Club

Sailing Programs

The DYC has a long tradition of sailing programs available to varied interests, skill levels and ages. We’re
a US Sailing member club and founding member of the 100+ year old Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing
Association (DRYA), Interlake Yachting Association member and active in other regional and national
sailing entities or associations.  Our Club has hosted numerous district, regional and national
championship regattas and each year - for over 100 years - has held a both a spring Memorial Regatta
and fall Sweepstakes Regatta, as well as a the traditional season ending DRYA Junior Sailing regatta and
banquet.  In 2014, the Detroit Yacht Club hosted the induction ceremony for the National Sailing Hall of
Fame in our Clubhouse’s Grand Ballroom.

Sail Yacht Race Committee

The SYRC is responsible for organizing the DYC’s annual summer Off-the-Dock racing series, the May
Memorial Regatta and the September Sweepstakes Regatta as well as periodic winter programs like
sailing lectures and racing seminars.  Member-owned keel boats participate in club races and regattas
and are often looking for crew to or volunteers to help with Race Committee duties. While “yacht
racing” is in our Committee’s name, the really important part is the SAILING and we encourage or
organize non-competitive sailing activities as part of our mission as well.

DYC’s Memorial Regatta celebrated its 100th running in 2016. Each year, SYRC members select a
recently-departed member of the local sailing community to celebrate for his or her contributions to
yachting in our area.  The honoree is remembered with memorial stories, pictures and often sailing lore
at a cocktail party during the week prior to the Regatta. The Regatta is held annually on the last Saturday
in May and traditionally finishes in the Detroit River in front of the Clubhouse and docks.  On Sunday,
the Com. Edwin Jaquet Memorial Small Boat Races are held for Flying Scots in the Detroit River.

The Sweepstakes Regatta, so named because it was originally among the last races of the sailing season
– when the stake marks were swept from the race course following the race – is held the first Saturday
in September.  The Sweepstakes Regatta celebrates its 120th year to coincide with the DYC’s 150th, so is
among one of the oldest ongoing traditions running at the Club.  For the Sweepstakes Regatta, SYRC
selects a living person to honor as our “Man of the Day” for his – or her-  efforts in support of our sailing

Off-the-Dock Races are a series of races running from late May through early September each summer.
The series typically consists of 10 races on Thursday evenings with the final race on Friday evening
before the Sweepstakes Regatta.   For Off-the-Dock Races, the fleet is split into 3 classes of keelboats
and the Flying Scots and each class sails a course starting and finishing off of the DYC Main Dock.
Following each evening’s racing, flags are awarded to the day’s winners in an informal party inside at the
DYC Grill Bar where sailors and non-sailors alike enjoy the stories and camaraderie that are almost as
much fun as the sailing itself.

2018 Off-the-Dock Race Series - Races start at 7:00 pm and start and finish off of DYC Main dock.
Awards are in the Grill Bar following the races each night.

Flying Scots Committee

The “Scots” are the DYC’s club-owned fleet of one-design 19-foot sloop rigged sail boats.  The Flying
Scots Committee is responsible for all aspects of owning and managing the boats.  Boats are typically
launched by the volunteers on the last Saturday in March and hauled out on the first Saturday in
November – weather permitting, of course.  The Flying Scots Committee awards sailing card
designations to members based on skill level – Helmsmen, Skipper or Racing Skipper.  Sailing cards
enable members to use the Club boats for pleasure sailing, practice or racing events. More information
on sailing cards can be found here.

DYC’s adult learn to sail program is run by the Flying Scots Committee and runs on Tuesday and most
Thursday evenings all summer. The instruction program is run by volunteers who enjoy sharing their
love of the sport with dozens of new sailors each summer.  The program includes on the water
instruction, written manual and in-person lectures.  Instruction kicks off with a cocktail party in late April
and instruction begins the first week in May.  Sign up for adult instruction here.

The Flying Scots are also used for club and interclub one-design racing.  DYC Skipper and Racing Skipper
sailors can participate in the Spring Series on Saturdays in April and early May and in the Fall Series on
Saturdays in October.  DYC’s Flying Scots racing program has been an important part of sailing at DYC for
nearly 60 years, having hosted numerous districts and regional regattas and the 1976 North American
Championship Regatta and gifted the “Detroit Yacht Club Trophy” awarded for the top-finishing club-
owned boat in the North American Championships annually.

Flying Scots also hosts Explorer Scouts sailing instruction and regatta events. Scouts learn to sail or hone
their skills each year on Monday evenings in May and June.

To help raise funds for maintaining our fleet, the Flying Scots Committee can also organize and staff
small team-building events or other learn-to-sail activities hosted by a DYC member sponsor.  This is a
really fun way to get colleagues or friends out on the water for a few hours on a summer day.

Junior Sailing

DYC Junior Sailing is an instruction and racing program for kids ages 8 through 16.  Junior Sailing season
runs from mid-June through early August and uses a variety of small dinghies – Optis, O’Pen BIC, Lasers
and 420s.  Junior Sailing includes a family fun day and wraps up each year with the final DRYA Junior
Sailing Regatta and the DYC Around the Island race.  See the kid’s summer program here for details.
