Flying Scots
DYC Flying Scot Program The DYC's adult learn-to-sail program is one of the best of its kind anywhere in the nation. Meeting Tuesday and Thursday evenings from May through August, each summer we introduce dozens of adult students to the joys of sailing.**
Our classes use the DYC's fleet of Flying Scots, which are 19-ft. sloop-rigged sailboats. We provide all necessary equipment. As a student, you will progress through a series of skill levels until you are sailing on your own.
Learn at your own speed Our volunteer instructors will tailor their lessons to whatever level of experience you possess. Frequent lectures accompany on-the-water instruction, and DYC-specific written manual is included.
Flexible attendance We offer classes (weather permitting, of course) on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning between 5:30 and 6:30 in the evening. Students can attend either Tuesday, Thursday or both, as their schedules permit. Students may also be invited to participate in weekend events to practice skills learned in class.
Make new friends Our sailing classes include an active social component. Each season we host regular after-class get-togethers, several cook-outs, and one major end-of-season banquet.
Racing For the competitive-minded, DYC also has an active sailboat racing program and many of our veterans compete regularly in local, regional, and national sailing regattas. Students have the opportunity to learn and practice racing skills and can volunteer as crew in racing events to expand their own sailing experiences.
It's Affordable DYC members pay $250 for the class and may take it a second season for $125. Non-members may take the class for $600.
For more information contact Sean or Kelli Murphy (FS 2008 Instruction Chairs) at DYCFlyingScots@gmail.com or 248-506-8490.
**A shorter Wednesday-night advanced instruction program may also be available for those that have previously completed the introductory class.
